Congressman Udall and Judiciary Chairman John Conyers are failing to honor their oath to protect our US Constitution.
Rep. Udall should file a House resolution calling for immediate impeachment hearings for Vice President Cheney. He says he is qualified to become a Senator. Prove it! A qualified candidate would be able to convince fellow Representatives DeGette, Perlmutter and Salazar to file their own impeachment resolutions as well. Since they also took the same oath it should be easy to persuade them. Will Udall even try? Will Udall stand up for you and I and our Constitution?
The last thing Colorado Voters need is another Senator like Salazar who supported Attorney General Gonzales and voted for right wing candidates for the Supreme Court. We need a second Senator who has the guts to do the right thing for the voters every time.
Congressman Udall says he is qualified to be Colorado's second US Senator. We disagree! If Udall will not honor his oath to protect our Constitution then he is not fit to be a Congressman let alone a US Senator. The oath of office is the first instruction a Congressman receives from the Constitution. If Udall will not honor that oath or protect our Constitution, can any of us reasonably expect that he will protect our freedoms or work in our best interests? Will a man who refuses to protect the Constitution work to get you Single Payer Healthcare? Very Doubtful.
Udall's staff says he will never support impeachment because the people don't want it. He is so out of touch with the voters. We want investigations and accountability for Cheney and Bush, we just doubt that Udall will have the courage to vote for it.
Colorado Voters should stop sending Udall campaign money if he continues to refuse to perform his sworn duty to protect our Constitution.

John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is sitting on two Cheney Impeachment resolutions (H Res 333 & H Res 799)and refusing to bring them up for debate and action. He is trying to kill them by ignoring them. This is the same Rep. Conyers that assisted in the impeachment proceedings against Nixon in the seventies. Boy has he switched sides. Now even after recently writing a book demonstrating that Bush and Cheney's un-Constitutional crimes are worse than Nixons, he refuses to allow the Cheney impeachment resolution to move forward.
We hope the good voters of Ohio will cease to send Conyers money until he gets behind protecting our Constitution.

Anti-War and Impeachment Protesters Unwelcomed Vice President Cheney on his visit to Grand Junction Thursday

"Hey, thanks everybody for coming out to "unwelcome" the Vice President
on Friday. In all about 70 people showed up, which I'm sure was not
expected. It was a huge victory to have that many people in position
on his route, having moved 1/2 mile from the original meeting place
to get there no less! It was very well covered on TV Friday night".
Seems to me this protest made a difference.

"When Vice President Dick Cheney flew into Grand Junction on Friday for a fund-raiser for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer, anti-war and pro-impeachment protesters organized along two different routes Cheney's entourage was expected to take to the event".

And ProgressNow tries to interfere with an Impeachment Protest?
A curious thing happened to the Impeach Colorado Coalition at ProgressNowAction.Org the day of the event. John Kennedy the Coalition organizer, had emailed other Progress Now groups in Western Colorado to ask them to carry Impeach signs during the protest.Soon after, one of the ProgressNowAction.org staffers emailed the same groups of members to say that our Coalition had nothing to do with ProgressNowAction.
This seemed a little strange given that ProgressNowAction.org claims to be a progressive organization and our group has been part of PNA for over a year. We have continually protested for the protection of our US Constitution and Separation Of Powers, the most progressive and patriotic tasks of any group that is part of ProgressNowAction.org. John Kennedy has blogged steadily on the need for accountability for Cheney and Bush by impeachment, for over a year at ProgressNowAction.org. PNA says that they want progressives to stand up for their beliefs and blog on their beliefs.
Leslie Robinson stated in an earlier article on ColoradoConfidential.com that "ProgressNow" was "mounting a protest rally for Cheney's visit" in Grand Junction and was working with the Roaring Fork Peace Coalition and The Voice Of Reason, two area anti-war groups.
Is Progress Now trying to convince the anti-war groups in Colorado to not demonstrate for impeachment and trying to stiffle the voice of those wanting accountability for Cheney and Bush? Perhaps worse, are the groups accepting of PNA's effort to control them?
Does Progress Now and the Udall
Campaign dictate to anti-war groups in Colorado what they may say and
do about impeachment?
Did ProgressNowAction.org Staffers organize the Cheney Protests or did the local anti-war groups or is the PNA Staff just trying to scam them for the credit. Is someone's job in danger? Is it push back from the Udall Campaign staff?
Our parent group is "1stProtestInTheStreet" which was started by John Kennedy with the purpose of helping Democrats and Progressives that aren't used to street protesting, get started. 1stProtestInTheStreet was organized as a "Statewide Issue Group" within ProgressNowAction.org. Even though we are a State wide group we have been restricted by the PNA Staff from posting to all of the State's city, town, and regional groups at one time.
So far we have done over 100 Impeachment events all of which are listed on ProgressNowActions's website.
The PNA Staff has quite a few Udall supporters, and most of them are upset that our Coalition is pressuring Udall to honor his Oath of Office to protect the US Constitution against Cheney and Bush by publicly calling for immediate Impeachment Hearings.
Is ProgressNow risking it's tax exempt status as a 501C corporation by interfering with political activity against a Democratic candidate, Udall? The PNA Staff has a long history of hassling impeachment advocates. The Staff had censored a posting we did to let the PNA members know of an event held at the Mercury Cafe last Fall by Mark Benner where he was to announce his canidacy in the Senate race. Their stated reason was that their tax status does not allow campaigning for individual candidates. But now they appear to be doing the same thing in reverse. Hassling our group for asking their candidate Udall to support Impeachment Hearings. We think they even deleted the posting where we just complained about the deletion?
It is very disturbing that the Staff of ProgressNowAction.org is interfering with our impeachment organizing efforts. That this has been going for some time doesn't make it any easier to deal with.

Bush's Latest Signing Statement
Is Grounds for Impeachment
Among the measures Bush's latest signing statement declares the right to violate are: the establishment of a commission to investigate U.S. contractor fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan, the expansion of whistleblower protections, a requirement that U.S. intelligence agencies respond to congressional requests for documents, a ban on f unding permanent bases in Iraq, and a ban on funding any actions that exercise U.S. control over Iraq's oil money.
Over the past seven years, the same language used by Bush on Monday, usually attributed to Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff David Addington, has been the precursor to numerous violations of law by his administration, including sections of law banning the use of torture and banning the use of funds to construct permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq.
In January 2007, the House Judiciary Committee held hearings on Bush's use of signing statements at which Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Elwood claimed that the president is free to violate any laws until the Supreme Court rules otherwise. Following this hearing, the Government Accountability Office studied a small sample of Bush's signing statements and found that in a significant percentage of cases his administration was, in fact, violating the sections of law he had claimed the right to "interpret (ignore Ed.)."
The U.S. Constitution requires that the president "take care that the laws be faithfully executed." Article I, Section 7, says that:
"every bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a law, be presented to the President of the United States; if he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the objections at large on their journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the bill, it shall be sent, together with the objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a law."
"The rule of law established by the Constitution has been undermind in an almost unnoticed revolution," said Leslie Cagan, National Coordinator of United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ). "The Constitution allows the president to veto bills or sign and enforce them, not to rewrite them or to disobey them.
The same document that gives the Congress the power to make every law, gives it the sole power to raise and spend money, and the sole power to declare war. The people's representatives in Congress are losing all of these powers through their failure to act on the remedy provided for precisely this situation: impeachment."
According to the U.S. State Department, 65% of Iraqis favor a withdrawal of U.S. troops. In fact, neither the Iraqi people nor the people of this country have ever supported a permanent U.S. presence in Iraq, and the U.S. Congress has never approved one.
"The sooner all the troops and military contractors are home," said Cagan, "the sooner rebuilding can begin for the Iraqi nation and for our democracy."
UFPJ is urging its members to speak with the media about
this matter and to contact the
House Judiciary Committee
to request that it begin
impeachment hearings.

Yesterday, President Bush signed the Defense Authorization Bill, including Section 1222 prohibiting permanent military bases in Iraq, with the now customary "signing statement" declaring that he has no intention of enforcing the law of the land, including this provision, though bound by oath and Constitution to do so.
And it guarantees U.S. involvement in age-old Iraqi sectarian conflict for decades to come.
this "ignores the 1969 National Commitments Resolution which holds that assisting a foreign country through the 'use of Armed Forces' is a 'national commitment' that requires a treaty, statute, or concurrent resolution (of Congress)."
Now Congress must hold hearings not only on the legal implications of this major end run of the Constitutional process but also on the current status and planned expenditure on permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq. The costs to the American taxpayers... will be in the hundreds of billions of dollars, not to say the potential tens of thousands of American casualties...
Of course, the next Democratic president can simply cancel this back-door deal. But Karl Rove, Jr., will have those pictures of half-finished bases to use in future elections to prove the Democrats soft on terrorism.
Though the press doesn't seem interested in finding out,
my guess is that the bases now under construction are
garrisons outside the cities. They will be fortresses
in the desert reminiscent of French fortresses in the
jungles of Indochina. Future occupying (US)troops will
provide target practice for mortar and rocket attacks
for decades to come.

Bush asserts authority to bypass defense act
Calls restrictions on his power unconstitutional
He seems to be trying force a constitutional crisis
on a spineless Democratic Congress.

Bush made the assertion in a signing statement that he issued late Monday after signing the National Defense Authorization Act for 2008.
In the signing statement, Bush asserted that four sections of the bill unconstitutionally infringe on his powers, and so the executive branch is not bound to obey them.
(Bush has asserted his expanded powers in
over 800 signing statements and so far the apparently
guttless, spineless, unpatriotic House Democrats
have not challenged him or honored their Oath
of office to protect the Constitution by holding
Impeachment Hearings.

Wexler proposed opening impeachment hearings on Cheney.
Conyers committee staffer Perry Appelbaum laid out instead a schedule for non-impeachment hearings over the coming 11 months. Conyers' notion is to hold non-impeachment hearings on "the imperial presidency" and run out the clock (for Pelosi).
I guess that would be sort of like a dozen police officers paying a non-arresting visit to the home of a mass murderer.
Seriously? An "imperial" president, and you don't impeach him, and you don't retire or commit suicide? This baffles me. (Is Conyers getting senile? Ed.)
Now, there are topics that have not been touched in congressional investigations over the past 12 months, such as the Iraq war lies. But a lot of the other topics have already been gone over, just absent the I word.
What will differentiate the new non-impeachment hearings from the past year's worth of non-impeachment hearings?
Of course, getting witnesses to show up and testify would be a change, but without impeachment, nothing will compel any witnesses to testify who have previously refused.

McGovern, a presidential candidate in 1968 today made these comments in a Washington Post article "I have belatedly and painfully concluded that the only honorable course for me is to urge the impeachment of the president and the vice president".
"Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses. They have repeatedly violated the Constitution. They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time. Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world. These are truly "high crimes and misdemeanors," to use the constitutional standard."
"How could a once-admired, great nation fall into such a quagmire of killing, immorality and lawlessness?"
"It happened in part because the Bush-Cheney team repeatedly deceived Congress, the press and the public into believing that Saddam Hussein had nuclear arms and other horrifying banned weapons that were an "imminent threat" to the United States. The administration also led the public to believe that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 attacks -- another blatant falsehood."
"Impeachment is unlikely, of course. But we must still urge Congress to act...This, I believe, is the rightful course for an American patriot."
McGovern quoted former US Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman, who played
a key role in the Nixon impeachment proceedings after
Watergate who said "A President, any President, who maintains that he is above
the law -- and repeatedly violates the law -- thereby
commits high crimes and misdemeanors."

Another Gulf of Tonkin Incident style Excuse For War in the making?
That was a reported North Vietnamese attack on American destroyers that helped lead to President Lyndon Johnson's sharp escalation of American forces in Vietnam.
The author of the report "demonstrates that not only is it not true, as (then US) secretary of defense Robert McNamara told Congress, that the evidence of an attack was 'unimpeachable,' but that to the contrary, a review of the classified signals intelligence proves that 'no attack happened that night,'" FAS said in a statement.
"What this study demonstrated is that the available intelligence shows that there was no attack. It's a dramatic reversal of the historical record," Aftergood said.
"There were previous indications of this but this
is the first time we have seen the complete study,"
he said.
